BioReCer’s Swedish stakeholders event

A wide range of EU policies and initiatives are linked to forests and the ecosystem services they provide, including biodiversity and climate change mitigation. This is recognised in the EU Forest Strategy for 2030, the EU Biodiversity Strategy, the EU Nature Restoration Law and in the Renewable Energy Directive (RED). Forest therefore also play an important role in the EU Bioeconomy Strategy by supporting employment in rural areas[1]. The countries with the largest forest areas in the EU are Sweden (28 million hectares), Finland (22 million hectares) and Spain (19 million hectares), as estimated for 2021. In particular, 69% of Sweden is covered with forests. The forest industry represents approximately 10-12% of the Swedish industry in terms of employment and sales. Industrial forest processing is well-controlled and results in large volumes of GROT (branches, roots, tips), saw dust, bark and sludge[2].

The development of new quality standards for organic products is the new frontier of sustainability on which the consortium of BioReCer is working with the aims to assessing and complementing current certification schemes for biological resources according to the new EU sustainability goals to enhance bio-based circular systems.

In this BioReCer event which took place at the premises of the project partner RI.SE the Swedish stakeholders were informed on BioReCer results such as sustainability indicators, the assessment framework, tracking and traceability indicators and the preliminary BioReCer ICT tool. They were also actively involved in a brainstorming session and a site visit.

BioReCer in a webinar by the related project 3-CO

Following different calls of the European Commission several Horizon Europe projects are currently tackling the issue of certification and labelling by taking into account current political and societal developments. The projects’ diverse approaches encompass assessment, monitoring, and validation of bio-based case studies, defining sustainability indicators, formulating guidelines for certification and labelling schemes, offering policy recommendations, and developing innovative digital tools to provide information on bio-based value chains to consumers or industry stakeholders.

On June 7th six HORIZON Europe projects, i.e. 3-CO, BioReCer, HARMONITORStar4bbsSUSTRACK, and Sustcert4Biobased, participated in a webinar organised by 3-CO and presented their innovative approaches, recent advancements and latest results that pave the way for shaping a strong circular EU bioeconomy.
